Dr Stella Butler joined the University of Leeds in 2011 as University Librarian and Keeper of the Brotherton Collection.
She previously worked at the University of Manchester as Head of Special Collections and latterly as Deputy University Librarian. Stella was educated at the University of Manchester and has a PhD in the History of Science and Medicine. She taught chemistry before pursuing a career in museums and libraries. She worked at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester and subsequently at Catalyst (the Museum of the Chemical Industry), where she won two Gulbenkian prizes.
Stella’s research has explored the relationship between science and medical practice; the history of hospitals; the development of orthopaedics; the history of microscopy. She has overseen collecting policies at two of the UK’s leading research libraries.
Stella chairs the panel for the Designation Scheme of Arts Council England which identifies and celebrates collections of outstanding significance held in museums, libraries and archives across England. She is Treasurer of Research Libraries UK, a member of the Board of Sconul and Deputy Chair of the Board of Senate House Library, London University.
