Ryan Williams is a senior lecturer in Religious Studies at the University of Queensland, Australia.
He has conducted fieldwork among Muslims in the UK and Australia, focussing on themes that include Islam and the state and science and Islam. He is interested especially in how Muslims navigate the multiple ethical and moral demands typical of contemporary societies, and his research has demonstrated how Muslims respond to these demands through a diverse range of expressions including a variety of Islamic revivalisms.
His research includes 7 years of fieldwork among Muslims in prison and probation contexts in the UK, and two studies of Muslims in Queensland, Australia, including one on science and Islam. He holds a PhD in Divinity from the University of Cambridge and a MA and BA in Religious Studies from the University of Calgary.
