AFRICAN STUDIES | COMMUNICATION | JOURNALISM | MEDIA AND CULTURE | SOCIOLOGY

Ganiyat Tijani-Adenle lectures journalism at Lagos State University, Nigeria. Her research interests intersect with media and communication, gender, and sociology. She obtained a Ph.D. in Media, Gender, and Communication from De Montfort University, Leicester, UK, and her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mass communication from the University of Lagos, Nigeria.

She practiced journalism at Voice of Nigeria (VON – Lagos), before joining the academia. She is a member of the International Research Network for the Study of Science and Belief in Society (INSBS).

As a researcher studying media and sociology about Nigeria (and Africa), Ganiyat works on how media framing and representation impact media audiences and society. She also investigates the ideological, spiritual, and religious beliefs that impact how African mainstream media (and popular culture) frame health issues, and the implications of these for science and medical advancements in the West African region. She studies the contexts that influence or determine the beliefs that Africans hold about scientific and medical recommendations and how these impact their health, and, by implication, their lives.
