MALIK, BILAL
CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY | EDUCATION
Dr. Malik received his doctorate in Culture, Communities & Education from Harvard University where he then continued to serve as a Lecturer in Social & Cultural Anthropology and Resident Dean (Leverett House). He is currently Associate Professor of Practice in Education and Associate Dean of Students at LUMS (Lahore, Pakistan).
His research interests lie at the intersection of education, religion, and cultural anthropology, broadly exploring the ways in which students’ pious or secular subjectivities are shaped by their educational contexts, and how, in turn, these subjectivities go on to shape students’ lives and social contexts. While trained as a cultural anthropologist, Dr. Malik has more recently started collaborating with colleagues working in Educational Economics & Policy to explore quantitative methods alongside qualitative methods in his research on Pakistan’s Islamic seminaries (madrasas).
