BAKENNE, NURENI AREMU

AFRICAN STUDIES | MEDIA & CULTURE | SCIENCE COMMUNICATION

Nureni Aremu Bakenne holds a Ph.D. in Communication Sciences from the North-West University, South Africa. He is currently a Research Fellow in the Department of Languages and Cultures, Faculty of Arts and Philosophy, Ghent University, Belgium. He is the Primary Investigator for YorubaPrint – a Starting Grant project funded by the European Research Council.

Bakenne also holds a Master of Science in Mass Communication from the University of Lagos and a BA in Mass Communication from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, both in Nigeria. His major research interests include journalism and media studies, indigenous and minority language media, African Studies and digital humanities among others. He has published with reputable publishers such as Palgrave, Springer, Routledge and has equally published articles in creditable journals which include Journal of Contemporary and Lifestyle Journalism; The Journal of Society and Media; Journal of Human Rights and Gender Education and African Language Media (2023) among others.

His recent publications are chapter contributions in Africa’s Engagement with the Responsibility to Protect in the 21st Century (2024) and Political Economy of Contemporary African Culture: The Political Interplay (2024). He is a member of the African Studies Centre, Universiteit Leiden, The Netherlands.
